Foreign Minister to attend FODP meeting on Oct 15 in Brussels


BRUSSELS, Oct 12 (APP): Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi accompanied by a high level delegation will reach Brussels on Oct 13 on a two-day visit to attend the third ministerial meeting of Friends of Democratic Pakistan (FoDP) to be held on Oct 15.According to Pakistan’s embassy in Brussels, the meeting will be co-chaired by Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi and European Union High Representative Baroness Catherine Ashton.

The ministerial meeting, among other things, will review the post flood situation and early recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction requirements based on the Damaged Needs Assessment being jointly prepared by the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.
The ministerial meeting will also deliberate on energy sector reforms, Malakand Development Strategy, institutional capacity building and Pakistan’s efforts towards economic stabilization.
The Friends of Democratic Pakistan (FoDP) is a global forum and a platform which was established in September 2008 in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session.
It aims to extend support to the Democratic Government of Pakistan and its efforts to consolidate democracy in Pakistan and support social and economic development in the country.
The founding member states of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan (FoDP) include Britain, France, Germany, the United States, China, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, Turkey, Australia and Italy.
The United Nations and the European Union are also among the founding members.
European Commission, Denmark, Iran, Japan, The Netherlands, Norway, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, Spain and Sweden currently are also member states of FoDP whereas Egypt is attending the meeting for the first time.
The international financial institutions associated with the FoDP include Asian Development Bank (ADB), Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and World Bank (WB).
