Pak, Iran should not succumb to pressure of enemy countries


LAHORE, Oct 16 (APP): Consul General Islamic Republic of Iran in Lahore, Ali Nikan has said that countries hostile to Pakistan and Iran are continuously exerting pressure to spoil their mutual pleasant relations but in view of centuries old historical, cultural literary, religious and spiritual ties, they should not succumb to their pressure.These views were expressed by him during a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor Punjab University Prof Dr. Mujahid Kamran in his office here Saturday. The cultural Attache Dr. Abbas Famoori, Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Jamil Anwar Ch, Chairman PU Firdosi Chair Dr. Aftab Asghar and other were also present.During the meeting which lasted about an hour, views were exchanged on various proposals for accelerating pace of academic and research activities between varsities of both the brotherly countries. Ali Nikan said under the Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline agreement, Iran has already completed work on laying of pipeline upto its boundaries while it is also willing to provide surplus electricity to Pakistan.

He said Iranian agrarian experts had made impressive strides in developing high-yielding and disease-resistant varieties of almond, rice, pumpkin and pulses. As such sharing of research findings and experiences between agricultural researchers and progressive farmers could prove highly beneficial and fruitful in attaining goal of food self-sufficiency in both the countries.
He further remarked that in future PU scholars and faculty members would always be invited to present their research papers in international, national and regional conferences and seminars hosted by Iranian varsities.
Reciprocating brotherly sentiments of visiting dignitaries, Dr. Kamran said friendship between Pakistan and Iran has stood the test of time in every hour of need and adversity. Rather their survival and prosperity was dependent upon their everlasting friendship, he added.
Briefing the honoured Iranian guests about ongoing Punjab varsity academic and research pursuits, the Vice-Chancellor said PU is the oldest and largest teaching university of the subcontinent. Currently, 32,000 graduates are studying on campus while 550 public and private sector colleges are affiliated with this alma mater which takes examinations of five lac students in a variety of subjects every year. He also informed that Prof Dr. Saleem Mazhar would be very shortly leaving for Tehran to take over charge of Urdu Chair there.
Later Dr. Kamran presented gifts of painting and his books to the Iranian Consul General who also presented souvenirs to him in return.
