MQM wins Karachi by-polls
KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) member Saifuddin Khalid has secured the seat of a member of provincial assembly (MPA) and has been declared successful in the by-election of PS-94. According to the unofficial results, 92,125 votes had been cast in the constituency of PS-94, out of which only 189 votes had been rejected. Khalid had secured 91,397 votes. Despite a boycott Awami National Party (ANP) candidate Pir Riaz Gul got 292 votes, while independent candidates, including Zeenat Yasmin received 100 votes, Abdul Haq got 90 and Maqsood Alam received 57 votes. The seat had fallen vacant after the assassination of MQM legislator Raza Haider. In the 2008 general election, Raza Haider had bagged 79,634 votes compared to 4,649 votes secured by the Pakistan People’s Party candidate, Syed Rais Ahmed Kazmi, 2,630 votes by Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal candidate Maulana Rashid Ali; ANP candidate Gul Raj Khan bagged 959 votes. staff report
