Clinton announces $ 2.29 billion new security package for Pakistan
WASHINGTON, Oct 22 (APP): The United States Friday announced a new $ 2.29 billion security assistance package for Pakistan over five years (FY 2012-FY 2016) as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hailed Pakistan as a strong ally in the fight against terror.Co-chairing the US-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Clinton described relationship between the two countries as “deep, broad and enduring.”
The security assistance commitment includes two billion in Foreign Military Financing and $ 29 million in International Military Education and Training funding.
In additon, the top US diplomat made a strong commitment to Pakistan Counter insurgency Capability Fund assistance based upon the ground requirements and year to year needs with FY 2012 funding of no less than in recent years.
“The commitment underscores the importance the US places on its long-term relationship with Pakistan. Providing this assistance helps Pakistan address our mutual security challenges,” a State Department statement said as defense secretaries and military chiefs of the two countries and cabinet members from both sides attended the plenary session of the Strategic Dialogue.
In addition to increased funding for FMF, this is the first time the United States has made a multi-year commitment of IMET funding.
“We believe IMET is critical to furthering our strategic partnership. It offers the US and Pakistan military personnel the opportunity to build relationships while honing professinal skills through a variety of military education courses.”
