Asma becomes first female SCBA president
ISLALAMABAD, Oct 27 (APP): Asma Jehangir, a renowned human rights activist and lawyer leader, became the first female elected president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) with a margin of 38 votes. According to unofficial results, she secured 834 votes from different polling stations while her main rival Ahmed Owais finished with 796 votes. The third contestant Muhammad Ikram Chaudhry got 172 votes.
In Karachi, Asma led with 114 votes followed by Ahmed Owais with 107 votes.She also succeeded in Lahore, Quetta and Peshawar. However, she lagged behind in Islamabad, Multan and Bhawalpur.
In Lahore, she led the contest with 419 votes against 409 votes polled for Ahmed Owais. In Quetta she got 24 votes while Owais obtained 22 votes. In Peshawar she secured 47 votes against 33 votes of Ahmed Owais.
Ahmed Owais, a candidate of Professional group, obtained 136 votes in Islamabad and led the contest with a margin of 12 votes while Asma Jahangir finished second by security 124 votes.
In Abbotabad , Asma led the contest with 17 votes. In Multan Owais got the first position with 45 votes while Asma obtained 44 votes.
There were a total of 2,126 members of Supreme Court Bar Association for its 13th elections.
Asma Jehangir, known for her human rights activities not only in the country but acknowledged worldwide, was already predicted to give a tough time to the other two equally poised contestants.
For the office of secretary, Muhammad Sohail Dar, Munsif Malik Awan,Qamar Zaman Qureshi and Rana Farman Ali Sabir were in the run. Sana Ullah Khan Zahid had been elected unopposed for the office of Finance Secretary.
The registered members of voters are : 105 members in Balochistan, 185 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, (in Punjab) Bhawalpur 62, Islamabad/Rawalpindi 312, Lahore 1,018 and 116 in Multan, and 328 in Sindh.
For vice presidents slots following candidates contested :- in Balochistan Jahanzaib Khan Jadoon and Mohammad Mohsin Javed, in KPK, Malik Manzoor Hussain and Muhammad Arif Khan, in Punjab, A. Hameed Talib Rana, Abdul Sadiq Chaudhry, Malik Muhammad Imtiaz Mahl and Zubair Khalid, in Sindh, K.A. Wahab, Shafaat Hussain, Shamsuddin Khalid Ahmed Ansari and Syed Jamil Ahmed.
For the office of additional secretary M. Saliheen Moghal and Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta were in the run.
In Balochistan, eight candidates were contesting for executive members, in KPK there were four contestants, in Punjab the number stoods at 13 while in Sindh, 9 candidates tried their luck.
