Govt. to continue combating terrorism: PM
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has pointed out the importance of bridging the trust-deficit and the need for a positive approach on the Pakistan-US relationship from both sides.
He also reiterated government’s commitment to continue fighting against terrorism.
Gilani was talking to new US appointed US Ambassador Cameron Phelps Munter, who called on him on Saturday.
The PM, while welcoming Munter, assured him of the Pakistan government’s complete support during his tenure to further expand the strategic partnership between the two countries in multidimensional fields.
Prime Minister Gilani said that despite the havoc caused by the unprecedented floods in Pakistan’s history, his government was determined to carry on the fight against terrorism.
He, however, called on the US to help build the capacity of the Pakistani law enforcement agencies and enhance the defence and intelligence sharing cooperation between the two sides to defeat the common enemy.
Gilani said that losing the war against terrorism was not an option and his country expected the US and its allies to share the successes and failures of this process.
The prime minister underlined the need for increased people to people exchanges on all levels, particularly parliamentary delegations to address the misperceptions, as well as to create a better understanding of each others’ position and perspective.
He, however, stressed the need for fast tracking of the assistance mentioned in the Kerry Lugar Act, reimbursement by the Coalition Support Fund, legislation for the reconstruction opportunity zones (ROZs) and enterprise fund, and the early implementation of the mutually agreed action plan in all working groups in the recently held third round of Strategic Dialogues to ease Pakistan’s economic difficulties accentuated by the floods.
