Daily Times Monitor

LAHORE: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has said nationalisation of educational institutions was a mistake and wrongs of the policy would be undone, a private TV channel reported on Saturday.

Speaking at the death anniversary of Zamindar College founder Nawabzada Fazal Ali in Gujrat, Gilani said no one could progress without accepting mistakes, adding that compensation should be given for such mistakes.

He said after the Aligarh University and Anjuman Islam Lahore, the Zamindar College was the third biggest institution in the sub-continent, and people of the area had an emotional connection with the college and personalities related to it. Gilani said the government was committed to working collectively to root out terrorism, alleviating poverty, improving law and order, and tackling the challenges of inflation, unemployment and power shortages.

He said the objective of the policy of political reconciliation was to resolve problems of people. He said the people had given mandate to the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and “it would work with others for the welfare of people despite differences of party manifesto and ideology,” the channel reported.

Gilani added that after the completion of the poverty survey, under the Benazir Income Support Programme, concessions would be given to poor people in school fees, electricity and gas bills, and health and life insurance would also be provided to the needy.

Talking about post-flood rehabilitation, he said the federal and provincial governments were prepared to help build homes for the flood-affected people.

Gilani pointed out that 20 million people had become homeless due to the floods and Pakistan, which is the fifth biggest producer of milk, had suffered losses to its livestock. Gilani assured that the damaged infrastructure due to the floods, including roads and bridges would be rebuilt.

He said the priorities of budget would be reordered for the rehabilitation of the affected people and the government had accepted the challenge to restore agriculture affected in areas considered the food basket of the country.

Gilani announced a grant of Rs 50 million for the Zamindar College to improve facilities and ordered to set up a livestock institute in the area. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and other federal and provincial ministers also attended the ceremony, the channel reported.
