Pakistan leads panel, boosting Asian Group’s role in UN affairs
UNITED NATIONS: An ambassadorial-level meeting of the Asian Group re-appointed Pakistan as the head of a panel tasked with enhancing the 52-member group’s role in UN activities, diplomats said.
The appointment of Pakistan as chairman of the Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG) for the fourth consecutive term was unanimous. It is for a period of three months from November 1, 2010 to January 31, 2011.
Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon had proposed in October 2009, during his chairmanship of the Asian Group for the month, that the Asian Group being so large and important, with huge economic, natural and human resources should play its due role in the UN matters rather than just considering procedural election matters. app
