Senate body calls for APC on Balochistan

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Functional Committee of Senate for Human Rights on Friday called for convening an All Parties Conference (APC) on Balochistan and noted that without engaging the Baloch nationalists the durable peace could not be restored in the insurgency-hit province.

Committee also recommended that those involved in disappearing of Baloch people should be brought to court of law. The meeting was presided over Senator Afrasiab Khattak to review the missing persons, target killing of teachers, kidnapping for ransom and the precarious law and order situation in Balochistan.

The committee proposed to the federal and provincial government of Balochistan to immediately call an APC for Balochistan with the special focus to engage the nationalist forces in the conference to find out a way forward.

Khattak urged for utilizing the resources of Balochistan on its own people and deplored that Balochistan lags far behind from the other provinces when seen in the areas of development work and education.

Khattak said that deprivations of the people of Balochistan should be removed to address their grievances.

Advisor to Prime Minister (PM) on Human Rights Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar informed the committee that Balochistan home department had been ignoring the decisions of provincial high court in the cases of human rights.

Additional Secretary home Balochistan told the members that incidents of target killing and kidnapping for ransom in Balochistan had decreased.
