‘Relief items worth Rs 20m distributed among rain-hit people’
Karachi: Coordination meeting of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) Sindh provincial branch was informed that so far relief goods worth over Rs 20 million have been distributed among the rain-affected people of the province. The meeting, chaired by Farzhana Naek, was convened for evaluating and evolving future strategy for relief distribution and operation in Sindh. Representatives of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent societies (IFRC), German Red Cross (GRC), Norwegian Red Cross (NRC), Iran Red Crescent (IRC), British Red Cross (BRC) and Danish Red Cross (DRC) were also present. The IFRC Headquarter Geneva has launched an appeal to the international community to help these victims of flood. Till date the Red Cross/Red Crescent societies have assisted relief worth over Rs 20 million and the same amount is in the pipeline. Representatives of various Red Cross/Red Crescent societies were of the opinion that they need to create more public awareness about work through the local and international media in order to draw the attention of the International donor to the humanitarian crises in Sindh. A brief presentation was given by the Red Crescent Sindh, which shows that they are working in seven districts and providing more than 200,000 litter clean drinking water per day to the affectees of the local communities through eight water purification plants. Twelve mobile health teams, 13 ambulances along with team of lady doctors, paramedics and psychological support staff are providing day and night services. Naek in her closing remarks emphasised that they need to be prepared for the challenges in the upcoming winter season in order to provide assistance to the flood affectees. She applauded the efforts of the Red Crescent Society Sindh and expressed her deepest thanks to international partners - Red Cross/ Red Crescent societies who are contributing in this humanitarian crisis. She also expressed her deepest condolences for the sad and sudden demise of one of staff member Rizwan while on duty. Fateha was offered for the deceased in the meeting. ppi
