Sindh health department to create 75 new posts for pharmacists

KARACHI: Sindh health department is in process to create 75 new posts of pharmacists at its hospitals to ensure proper, effective and in-time utilisation of medicines, said Health Minister Dr Saghir Ahmed on Wednesday.

He was talking to a three-member delegation of International Health Partners (IHP), a British NGO, led by Anthony Dounnet at his office. The NGO has donated the provincial health department medicines worth $10 million. The health minister hoped that this would help Sindh government to partly address shortage of medicines at its different health facilities.

Sindh Health Secretary Rizwan Ahmed, Special Secretary Health Dr Sikander Panhwar and Additional Secretary Health (Dev) Dr Khalid Sheikh were also present on the occasion. Dr Ahmed urged the IHP representatives to provide specification and date of expiry of the medicines so that these may be utilised on need basis and in accordance to the required priority areas.

The health minister said the province has faced unprecedented natural calamities during 2010 and 2011. “We in 2010 were exposed to the worst floods in the history while this year unprecedented torrential rains badly affected the province,” he said. The minister said that during these natural disasters more than 300 health facilities were badly affected. Assistance is required from NGOs and international donors to re-activate these health centres and hospitals, he said. Dr Ahmed appreciated the cooperation extended by IHP for effective management and functioning of Mother and Child Centres and Neonatal Care in different parts of the province. This cooperation would help us in achieving millennium development goals in the province, he said. The health minister said that a summary would be moved to Sindh chief minister for proper utilisation of budgets approved for procurement of medicine for the government hospitals. app
