Lady health workers protest in Punjab cities


LAHORE: Lady health workers protested against non-payment of salaries in Lahore Saturday, Geo News reported. Six workers fainted while protesting who were taken to hospital immediately.

According to sources, lady health workers protested at Jinnah Bagh against non-payment of salaries for the past four months. The workers also declined to work for Dengue and polio campaigns.

The protesting ladies chanted slogans during the demonstration and demanded for the payment of their remunerations. They said that they were working on contractual basis for the past 15 months and demanded that they should be made permanent.

Six of the workers fainted during protest who were immediately taken to the hospital.

During the protest, the gates of Jinnah Bagh were closed to refrain them from reaching the Mall Road. However, the protesters reached at the Governor House and staged a sit-in that affected the traffic.

Opposition leader of Punjab Assembly Raja Riaz reached the spot to show solidarity with the lady heath workers and demanded for the prompt solution.

Following the protest, orders were issued to pay off two-month salaries on immediate basis while Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif instructed the home secretary and IG Punjab to investigate about police torture on the lady workers.

Sharif also asked the health secretary to submit a report on the workers’ demands.

Protests were also reported in Faisalabad, Multan, Khanewal and other cities of Punjab.
