Two suspects involved in 252 target killings arrested

KARACHI: The city police claimed to have nabbed two alleged suspects involved in nearly 252 target-killing cases in the metropolis.

Officials said that the suspects belonged to a political party and were arrested along with a huge cache of weapons after a brief encounter near Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine within the jurisdiction of Clifton police station. The apprehended suspects were identified as Zakir Hussain alias Adeel Agha alias Agha Hussain alias Yasir Dada and Gul Mohammad alias Gulu.

According to Clifton police, they managed to make arrests of the most wanted criminals on a tip-off and the raids for at least four more accomplices of the suspects, who were managed to escape under the cover of the firing, were also being carried out in different parts of the city.

Police officials said that the police intercepted them when the accused were going somewhere on motorcycles. They opened fire on police when they intercepted them but later police arrested them after encounter, says a police official.

Police officials also claimed to have recovered two kalashnikovs, two 8mm rifles, two 9mm pistols, two TT pistols and a motorcycle from their possessions.

According to SHO Shafiq Tanoli, during the initial course of interrogation, the suspects revealed to have involved in the killings of 252 people, majority of them were political workers and police officials and personnel.

He said that the accused persons also killed DSP Raheem Bangash, DSP Nawaz Ranjha, inspector Nasirul Hassan and dozens of policemen, adding that they also attacked several police stations in the city. Tanoli said that the accused persons were affiliated with a political party and one Zakir Hussain was a hardcore criminal. He during interrogation told police that he from South Africa was running 20 groups of target killers and each groups comprised nearly 25 members.

Officer said that Ajmal Pahari, Shakir and Javed Bunda were also being supervised by Zakir Hussain, who were running groups of target killers in Karachi on his directives. SHO further said that Zakir Hussain was involved in those activities since 1994 and escaped to South Africa in 1997 after killings 27 people. He returned to Pakistan in 2007 following his party orders. The officer further said more disclosures from the suspects were expected while the further investigation was in progress.
