PRCS to set up seven water plants in flood-hit areas

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) will be installing seven more water filtration plants besides four mobile health units in the next two days based on field assessments and on ground needs of the rain-hit people in Badin, Benazirabad and Sanghar.

After the installation of these additional water filtration plants, the total number of plants installed in the affected areas of Sindh with a capacity to filter millions of litres of water on daily basis will increase, while the number of health teams will be 15 at the cost of Rs 10 crore.

The decisions were taken after the PRCS chairperson Sherry Rahman soon after assuming charge of the office directed the officials to install more water filtration plants in the affected areas to provide relief to the victims. Sherry also held meetings with the movement partners to seek more funding and gear up efforts to help the victims as the winter is approaching fast and there is a dire need to redouble the relief efforts.

Currently, there are eight WATSAN teams in the field providing WATSAN services and water treatment plants set up for providing clean drinking water in the following districts: Badin, Mirpurkhas, Benazirabad, Khairpur and Sanghar besides water purification tablets (aqua tabs) and hygiene promotion sessions. The International Committee of the Red Cross is also supporting PRCS WATSAN services by providing five trucks (10,000 litres) for safe provision of clean drinking water to the areas from where people cannot travel up to the water units. The PRCS Health Department has 11 mobile health units (MHU), two basic health units and have treated 45,000 patients in eight districts.
