SC seeks report on industrial usage of noxious chemicals
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed Pakistan Environmental Protection Authority (PEPA) to complete its investigation within next 30 days, regarding Dedex Eternet Public Limited Karachi, which is allegedly using a chemical, espestos that causes cancer to the community.
The PEPA was also asked to submit its audit report before the court as well. A three -member bench of the apex court comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Tariq Parvez hearing a petition filed by the Dedex Eternet Public Limited challenging the tribunal constituted by PEPA to investigate the usage of a chemical namely espestos which was causing cancer to the community.
As per the details of the case, Fareed Ahmad was working as a manager in the same company and died of cancer.
His brother Syed Haroon filed an application to the PEPA that his brother died of cancer due to the industrial waste of the factory which causing cancer to the entire community living close to the factory. He submitted that espestos is a very injurious chemical causing cancer and the factory was dumping its waste in a 15 kilometers long area under sand. staff report
