Yasin Azad wins SCBA top slot

LAHORE: According to unofficial results, Muhammad Yasin Azad, the outgoing president Asma Jahangir backed-candidate was elected as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association by defeating the professional group-supported former Sindh High Court judge Rashid A Rizvi. Yasin Azad bagged 954 votes and Rashid Rizvi, 861. Yasin Azad won with a margin of 93 votes. Azad won from polling stations in Lahore, Multan Bahawalpur, Peshawar, Haiderabad, and Quetta. Rizvi won from Abbotabad, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Karachi. Yasin Azad and Rashid Rizvi secured 457 and 422 votes from Lahore, 57 and 50 from Multan, 35 and 18 from Bahawalpur, 68 and 45 from Peshawar, 13 and 23 from Abbotabad, 59 and 32 from Quetta, 138 and 147 from Rawalpindin/Islamabad, and 103, 122 from Karachi, 20 and 2 from Haiderabad, respectively. Aslam Zar was elected as secretary with 472 votes. Defeated candidates Muhammad Maqsood Ahmad bagged 200 and Iftikhar Shahid, 137 votes. Imrana Parveen Baloch was elected vice president for the Punjab seat. Returning officer Afrasiab Khan Chaudhry will issue the final notification on November 2 after consolidating the votes. Both candidates for the top slot were from Sindh. After winning the election, Yasin Azad said that he was not affiliated with any political party and that his only goal was supremacy of the constitutiton, rule of law and welfare of the legal fraternity. Felicitating Yaseen Azad, the prime minister said that his victory was a manifestation of the confidence of the legal fraternity in leadership abilities. staff report
