US says Musharraf is private citizen, did not visit State Department
WASHINGTON: United States has said that former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf is a private citizen now and has not met any American official at the State Department.
State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland, on Sunday, avoided any comments on Pakistan’s internal politics but said Musharraf did not visit the Department. “I am not going to get into Pakistan’s internal politics. My understanding is that Musharraf has not been to the Department,” the spokesperson said when asked about Musharraf’s visit to the United States during which he sought support for political future of his party in Pakistan.
“However, some personnel of the Department have attended events at Washington think tanks, where Musharraf spoke,” she said. Nuland also gave no importance to Musharraf’s criticism of the current democratic government’s performance, saying “he is a private citizen. His views are his own obviously.” In answer to a question about Afghanistan, the spokesperson noted the US wanted all of Afghanistan’s neighbours to work for peace, security and stability in that country. app
