China donates $100,000 for quake victims
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Sun Weidong on Monday donated a cheque of $100,000 to Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) for the Balochistan earthquake victims.
Sun handed over the donation cheque on behalf of China Red Cross to PRCS Chairman Major General (r) Muhammad Nawaz Khan at the PRCS National Headquarters.
The ambassador also handed over a cheque of Rs 1.2 million to Khan on behalf of the Chinese embassy staff members for quake victims.
Speaking on the occasion, the ambassador said the Chinese government and people stand with their Pakistani brethren in this hour of need. He said the donation is a token of love from the Chinese nation to Pakistani people who are badly hit by the earthquake. He said that a friend in need is a friend indeed and “we can’t forget the support from the Pakistani people during the testing times”.
Khan thanked the Chinese ambassador for the generous support and hoped that the donation would help alleviate the sufferings of victims.
“The help reflects that the Chinese nation stands with the Pakistani brethren in this critical time,” he added.
Khan said that affection and love shown by China through thick and thin is a proof of strong Pak-China friendship. He told the ambassador that soon after the earthquake hit Balochistan, PRCS immediately dispatched non-food items to support 7,000 earthquake victims while health teams were sent there with life-saving medicines. “We were first to reach the affected areas,” he said.
The non-food items include family tent, blanket, tarpaulin sheet, stove, kitchen set, hurricane lamp, mosquito net, CGI Sheet, shelter tool kit and hygiene kit, the PRCS chairman said, adding that his organisation is making all-out efforts to reach out the victims as all communication channels have almost collapsed.
He said that PRCS will continue supporting the victims and more relief in terms of household and health will be provided on need basis. He said that PRCS stands with the victims of the earthquake and will stay in the area until their rehabilitation. He said that PRCS National Headquarters is coordinating with its Balochistan branch and will provide all-out support to it, especially with regard to shelter and health.
He said four of PRCS teams are working round the clock and so far hundreds of the injured have been provided medical care.
PRCS Secretary General Dr Mahboob Sardar and Assistant Secretary General Ateeb Siddiqui were also present on the occasion.
