Power tariff hike is a bitter which needs to be swallowed: Info Minister
ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Pervez Rasheed has said the recent hike in power tariff was a bitter pill which people would have to swallow to cure the ailing economy.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, he said that the country was in dire need of generating cheap electricity, adding that the government was hopeful to cope with the power shortage. He, however, added that it might take nine years to produce electricity at the lower rates.
Defending the government's decision of increasing the power tariff, the minister said that 42 percent of people in the country were using up to 200 units each month and they would not bear the burden of the fresh hike in prices.
Rasheed said that the government was bearing the loss of Rs126 billion on electricity subsidies. He said that the county needed to get rid of the culture of subsidies.
