PHC orders removal of Afghanistan from roaming facility

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday ordered mobile phone companies to remove Afghanistan from the list of countries enjoying roaming facility to check crime in Peshawar.

The order was issued during a hearing of suo motu case of illegal SIM cards by PHC Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan. The chief justice said that an investment “contributing to crime is not required”.

“In 90 percent crimes, Afghan SIM cards are used,” the chief justice remarked.

There is no need for such foreign investment which is undermining the country’s security.”

Justice Khan said that SIM cards were being sold like “tomatoes and potatoes” in open market.

During the hearing, representatives of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Interior Ministry and mobile phone companies and deputy attorney general were also present. The chief justice also expressed no confidence in NADRA, saying that the authority was “untrustworthy”. staff report
