Bitter pill has to be swallowed: Pervaiz

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Pervaiz Rashid said on Thursday that it was the responsibility of the government to take difficult decisions to steer the country out of the crises it faces and the partial withdrawal of subsidy on power was one such decision, and this “bitter pill” has to be swallowed. Addressing as chief guest at literary function organised here, the minister said that the government would generate cheap electricity thorough construction of new dams on the rivers but till then withdrawal of subsidy would have to be tolerated to revive the ailing economy. “We have to make a decision whether we should pay Rs 600 billion annual circular (debt) every year or to resolve the matter by withdrawing subsidy as no government can pay subsidy for indefinite period,” Pervaiz said. He said the government needs inexpensive power generation resources. However, he said the projects to generate inexpensive power would take time. app
