Consensus on Chaudhry Qamar Zaman for Chairman NAB

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah have reached consensus on the appointment of Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Speaking to reporters in Sukkur, Shah said consensus had been reached over the name of Chaudhry Qamar Zaman for NAB Chairman. The opposition leader told reporters that consensus was reached after Prime Minister Sharif had telephoned him on Tuesday for consultation.

Shah added that he had also spoken to PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi and MQM leader Farooq Sattar about the appointment but did not receive an official answer.

The PTI has rejected the decision to appoint Qamar Zaman for the post. In a statement, the party said they were not consulted over the decision.

Prime Minister Sharif and Khursheed Shah had held five meetings over the appointment of Chairman NAB. Chaudhry Qamar Zaman was serving as the Interior Secretary prior to being named Chairman NAB.

Qamar Zaman is a Grade 22 officer who has held several key posts including Education Secretary, Commissioner Lahore and Executive Director Higher Education Commission.

Qamar Zaman Chaudhry’s name was not discussed for the post during the last meeting between the prime minister and Khursheed Shah. During the last meeting, the names of two retired judges (Justice Mian Muhammad Ajmal, Justice Ijaz Chaudhry) and two retired bureaucrats’ (Chaudhry Abdul Rauf, Shaukat Durrani) were discussed.

Prior to this, the names of Justice (retd) Rana Bhagwandas, Sardar Raza and Rehmat Hussain Jaffri were proposed.
