Ruling PML-N wins PP-240 seat : PTI upsets PML-N in Faisalabad by-polls

FAISALABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Sheikh Khurram Shahzad won by-election in PP-72 Faisalabad on Monday, beating the ruling PML-N candidate Khawaja Liaquat.

According to unofficial results, Sheikh Khurram Shahzad secured 23,972 votes against his rival’s 18,825 votes.

The seat fell vacant after PML-N candidate Khwaja Muhammad Islam was declared disqualified over his fake degree. He had won the seat in the May 11 elections. The victory will earn the winning party an additional seat in the Punjab Assembly. The by-election results came as a surprise since Faislabad is considered to be a stronghold of the PML-N.

After announcement of results, PTI supporters, who were carrying cricket bats and party flags, were seen celebrating in the city.

The polling for by-polls in PP-72 commenced at 8am and concluded in a peaceful manner. No untoward incident was reported from any polling station across the constituency.

Police had made strict security arrangements at various polling stations. A spokesman for the Police Department said that as many as 1,239 police personnel performed duty during the voting. The constituency has 125 polling stations and four were declared sensitive where police had deployed four sub inspectors, four assistant sub inspectors and 40 constables.

Meanwhile, PML-N candidate Shamoona Ambreen Qaisarani won provincial assembly seat PP-240 in by-polls. agencies
