PTI calls for dissolution of ERRA, PERRA
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has demanded dissolution of Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) and Provisional Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (PERRA) and asked for powers for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to carry out rehabilitation operations for victims of devastating earthquake that hit the country in 2005.
Ali Asghar Khan, regional president of PTI Hazara, in a statement criticised “inefficiency” of federal institutions meant to work for reconstruction and rehabilitation of earthquake victims. He stated, “Both ERRA and PERRA have failed to perform their functions completely and have turned into white elephants that should be get rid of immediately to save national exchequer from more losses.”
“All funds should be handed over to KP government as it has both the capacity and will to work for the restoration of beleaguered public of quake-hit areas,” he said. Commenting on the miseries of affected population, Asghar said that many of them are bound to live under temporary shelters even after eight years of calamity and hence swift action is needed by authorities so that their miseries could be mitigated.
The PTI leader urged the federal government to empower the provincial government to complete incomplete projects through line department so that additional cost could be avoided.
He pointed out that despite massive international aid, around 40 percent of the schools and healthcare units lack basic facilities and children are forced to sit under tents.
He said that PTI’s provincial government wants to make the state well aware of its responsibilities so that rehabilitation and reconstruction work could be completed without any further delay.
