Elahi challenges non-party local bodies elections
Staff Report
LAHORE: PML-Q MNA and former deputy prime minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has moved a petition in the Lahore High Court challenging reduction in the seats of women and minorities in the local government system and holding of local bodies’ election on non-party basis.
The petitioner stated that through the newly promulgated Punjab Local Government Act the Punjab government has reduced the seats for women and minorities, which was a negation of rights of these classes of society. He said that the constitution had provided equal rights to every citizen and no law could take them away. He stated that the provincial government had also introduced the law to hold local bodies election on non-party basis, which is malafide.
Elahi alleged that the PML-N government wanted to establish dictatorship in Punjab by holding local bodies’ election on non-party basis. He said that holding non-party basis election would be against the spirit of democracy and political independence. He requested that the provision of law relating to non-party basis election and decreasing the number of women and minorities seats be set aside.
