Gone are the days when Constitution was abrogated, says CJ

SIALKOT: Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chauhdry has said that lawyers foiled all efforts to wrap up democracy in Pakistan by rendering sacrifices.

He said: “dignity of the judiciary will be protected no matter how great of a sacrifice we are required to render,”

The chief justice, who was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Judicial Complex in Diska, said gone are the days when the constitution was abrogated. The chief justice also applauded services of senior Supreme Court Judge Jawaad S.Khawaja.

He said that lawyers and civil society will not allow any effort to abrogate the constitution to succeed in the future.

“Today there is supremacy of Constitution, judiciary has ensured implementation of Constitution and protection of citizens”, the chief justice said addressing another ceremony in Sialkot.

He said that the lawyers put up a strong struggle for independent judiciary and the struggle aimed at strengthening the constitution increased judiciary’s prestige.

The CJ said that the judiciary also rendered sacrifices to ensure the implementation of the Constitution and protection of people.

He said that the judiciary bore great responsibility and there was a need to create an atmosphere to resolve people’s problems.

The chief justice said that impacts of 12 October, 1999 could be felt even today.
