Workshop on national innovation system, IP concludes

ISLAMABAD: The COMSATS-ISESCO Regional Consultative Workshop on National Innovation System and Intellectual Property concluded in Islamabad after accentuating the importance of innovation and intellectual property (IP) for the rapid national development in the present information age and globally competing knowledge-driven economies.

During the three-day workshop inaugurated on October 7, 2013, deliberations were made on enabling policy framework for an effective and integrated national innovation system (NIS) and supportive IP rights, as well as the roles of key stakeholders in an economy. The consultative workshop focused on Asian region, and had representation from international organisations, academic institutions, and IP and law firms from Bangladesh, China, Iran, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Pakistan, South Korea and Sri Lanka.

The Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS); Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO); Inter-Islamic Network on Information Technology (INIT); and COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), jointly organized the event from October 7 to 9, 2013, with a primary objective to raising understanding of the participants on NIS and IP rights and policies, as well as to share, learn and build on the best practices harnessing innovation and IP regime. The eight technical sessions of the workshop consisted of talks and presentations on topics relating to introduction to innovation, types and classification of innovations, impact and effect of innovation on national economy; delivery mechanisms for and key agents and actors in a national innovation system; intellectual property issues; industries, research and technologies centers; knowledge-economy; international IP laws; IPRs role in promoting a knowledge economy; and patent filing, prosecution and enforcement. An insight into the innovation policies of developing countries was also provided during the event in the country presentations from Nepal, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Iran.
