LHC seeks report from NEPRA, PEPCO on power tariff hike
LAHORE: The Chief Justice of Lahore High Court Umar Ata Bandial on Monday sought report from NEPRA, PEPCO and other respondents till October 24 on a fresh application challenging the recent increase in power tariff. Judicial Activism Panel chairman Muhammad Azhar Siddique filed the application against load sheddin and electricity theft. He submitted that the Federal government, without over coming the line losses caused due to theft and other reasons, causing an undue burden on the citizens. He submitted the recent increase of electricity tariff was an act of violation of Articles 9, 14, 18, 23, 24 and 25 of the Constitution. He said it was part of the record that during the hearing of the main case, the court had directed WAPDA and others to file detail of payments made to IPPs on account of circular debt and also decrease of tariff with reference to certain prices. He submitted that without fulfilling this exercise, the federal government increased tariff rate without taking the people in confidence. He said that in the interest of justice and fair play, the said increase in tariff and decrease on subsidy by the federal government may very kindly be declared illegal. staff report
