Nawaz says will raise drone issue with Obama

LONDON: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that US drone strikes are against Pakistan’s sovereignty and he will raise the issue in his meeting with US President Barack Obama .

He was talking to media after reaching here on Saturday. Nawaz Sharif said that all the political parties were agreed that drone attacks should be stopped as they were against the country’s sovereignty. Nawaz Sharif will stay in London before leaving for US.

Pakistan has long been opposing US drone attacks in its tribal region near Afghan border. Islamabad says the attacks prove counterproductive and detrimental and help militants recruit more fighters. Pakistan has lost over 40,000 lives including 5,000 security officials in its decade-long war against militants.

Nawaz Sharif government had called an all parties conference (APC) in a bid to hammer out consensus to hold dialogue with the Pakistani Taliban after rising to power following landmark May general election. However, the militants killed Lt. Gen Sanaullah Khan Niazi after the APC and vowed to continue their activities until Islamabad got the drone strikes stopped and withdrew troops from insurgency-stricken areas.
