CJ asks NEPRA to explain how it worked out tariff formulaISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry Tuesday told National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to explain as to how it determined the formula for power tariff hike following the directive of the government.
Presiding over the proceedings of the case in connection with loadshedding, the Chief Justice remarked that if the government is unwilling to give subsidy on electricity it may decide to do so, as prima facie the government is only helping the IPPs through its subsidy.
He said the apex court will decide as to whether the power tariff could be fixed on the basis of discretion. This is an inappropriate manner of doing things, he added.
The Chief Justice said if NEPRA wants to hire its counsel, it could do so.
Later, the Chairman presented the recent notification of power tariff hike to the court.
