Defence secretary apologises to SC
ISLAMABAD: Defence Secretary Lt General (r) Asif Yasin Malik on Tuesday submitted an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court over a contempt of court notice.
In his response, Asif Yasin Malik regretted not holding the local bodies elections in the cantonment board areas despite court orders. The apex court had issued contempt of court notice on October 12 during the hearing of a case regarding the holding of local bodies’ elections in all the cantonment board areas in the country. The court had observed that the defence secretary failed twice to fulfil his commitments made before the court which was tantamount to contempt of court. On Tuesday, the former army general filed his written apology to the court through his counsel Advocate Iftikhar Gilani and expressed regret over his failure.
The Supreme Court was unusually blunt in the contempt notice, warning the authorities that if they failed to comply, the law would take its own course. The court ordered advocates generals of all the provinces to present their stance about holding LG polls in their respective provinces. AGP Munir A Malik had been directed to act as prosecutor general in Yasin’s contempt case. The show-cause notice to the defence secretary had been issued under Article 204 of the constitution read with Contempt of Court Ordinance, 2003. agencies
