Superior courts’ judges be appointed on merit: Asma

LAHORE: Former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association Asma Jahangir has said that the appointments of superior courts’ judge should be made strictly on merit, and recommendations of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) should be adopted for elevation of judges.
Talking to media on Monday at the Lahore High Court premises, Asma said that for speedy disposal of cases and to provide justice to the people the procedure of the Supreme Judicial Council should be improved.
She said that the present procedure for appointments was not based on merit, and to ensure it is based on merit, the Judicial Commission should adopt the recommendations of the PBC. She also said that the chief justices of the high courts should not take suo motu notices as it was against the command of the constitution. Asma said that the right of appeal should be available against the decisions of the Supreme Court.
