Karachi case: SC rejects report on arms and drugs smuggling
KARACHI: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Thursday expressed its reservations and rejected a report submitted by Attorney General Munir A Malik regarding the smuggling of arms and drugs in the country, Geo News reported.
A larger bench of the SC headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the Karachi law and order implementation case today at its Karachi Registry.
During today’s proceedings, Attorney General Munir A Malik presented a report about the smuggling of weapons and drugs in the country, prepared in a meeting attended by the authorities of Maritime Security Agency (MSA), Coast Guard, Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) and other concerned departments.
The bench, while expressing its annoyance, rejected the report presented by the AG. The CJ reprimanded the authorities and said that the report does not include details of steps implemented by the concerned institutions to stop the heinous crimes, rather it has only explicated the legal clauses.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry also expressed displeasure over the chairman of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for not detailing about the actions taken so far. He remarked that a custom appraising officer gets appointed by bribing 2.5 million rupees. Who will mint money if not him, he said.
He continued saying that suspend the irresponsible officials if they are not fulfilling their duties. The CJ said that even an Army general is scared of naming Yousuf Goth.
The Chief Justice, while hearing the case, ordered the chairman FBR to present a report having the details of arms and weapons imported through the dealers during the past three years.
The AG told the bench that Coast Guard was misusing its powers and was harassing the common man, due to which its authority was withdrawn.
