ISLAMABAD: The attorney general of Pakistan (AGP) has assured the Supreme Court (SC) that the board of the Employees Old Age Benefit Institution (EOBI) would be constituted in a week’s time.
A two-member SC bench, comprising Justice Ijaz Chaudhry and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, on Wednesday heard a suo motu case concerning the EOBI scam. The EOBI had paid Rs 22 billion to DHA to purchase 321 kanals.
The AGP informed the court that the EOBI board could not be formed as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was not in the country. He further stated that the summary related to the setting up of board was with the PM’s Office.
Justice Saeed remarked, “How could EOBI retain both property and money?” He inquired from the AGP whether the EOBI management was interested in keeping land or money.
EOBI Chairman Muhammad Ayub admitted irregularities in the deal of property. He, however, stated that only EOBI board could decide whether to keep money or the property. The court, while adjourning the hearing until November 18, directed the federation to soon form the EOBI board.
