ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the government to appoint a permanent Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) by October 28.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Nasi-ul-Mulk heard the local bodies case. During proceeding the chief justice remarked that judges of the Supreme Court had been serving as the CEC for one year.
The chief justice added that judges of the apex court had to perform their duties and the government should appoint a permanent CEC by October 28. He warned that the Supreme Court judge would be withdrawn if a permanent CEC was not appointed on time.
The court also directed the Sindh government to present the local bodies bill in the provincial assembly by Thursday. The court stated that if the bill was not presented a notice would be issued to Chief Minister Sindh.
