‘Real purpose’ of contesting NA-122 was to bring justice: Imran

LAHORE: Days after losing the all important NA-122 by-election to ruling PML-N, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday said the ‘real purpose’ behind contesting the by-poll was nothing else but to introduce a new judicial system in the country.

Speaking to party workers and supporters here, he said his party’s struggle was for bringing a fair and transparent judicial system in Pakistan. “We didn’t have anything else to prove by winning the by-election,” he added.

The PTI chief said his party was investigating the issue of 'transferred votes' from NA-122 constituency.

The election tribunal took two and a half years instead of four months to declare election results of NA-122 and few other constituencies null and void, he said.

“Judicial system won’t revamp without transforming the electoral system,” said the PTI chief.

For the survival of the country, the Election Commission needs to be independent and free, said Khan.

“This war is not only for contesting elections but a first step towards reforming the system,” he added.

Imran Khan criticised Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique for running the election campaign for Sardar Ayaz Sadiq in Lahore by-poll. He at the same time lauded his party’s candidate Aleem Khan for giving Sadiq a good run for his money in the by-poll.

He pointed out that he as the party chief had lost by a margin of 9,000 votes in 2013 and this time around the ruling party could only manage to clinch the seat with a difference of mere 2,500 votes.

Dismissing criticism for giving the party ticket to Aleem Khan, the PTI chairman said he knew who the ‘real party worker’ was and who was not. “Who is selfie group and who works for the party the whole day, I know it all,” he remarked.

Warning the party workers, the PTI chief said those who have not performed well and haven’t worked hard enough to win the NA-122 by-poll should forget about getting the party ticket for future elections.

Bribing ex-Army Chief with BMW?

Taking a jibe at political rivals PML-N, Khan said, “These are the people of changa manga politics; buying people, they have never done things the right way in their life”.

“These people have never done anything honestly, it is not in their blood. They tried to bribe an army chief too,” he added.

Khan alleged that a BMW car was parked outside the former Army Chief’s residence. However, its keys were returned by the then COAS, he added.
