Pakistan has begun R&D programmes in lasers, phonics, says Rana Tanveer
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has started several R&D programs in lasers and Phonics including the National Institute of Lasers and Optronics (NILOP), in addition to specialized courses and research activities at various universities across the country, including COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT).
This was stated by Minister for Science, Technology and Defense Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain during his address of inaugurating ceremony of the three-day International Symposium on light and life, at CIIT,s campus on Wednesday.
This event was organized from October 14 to 16 2015, to celebrate the UN International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies, as well as to highlight the latest research and developments in the field taking place across the globe.
The organizers of the event include Abdus Salam-International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Italy;CIIT; and the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS). The local sponsors of the events were the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Pakistan;the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan;Pakistan Academy of Sciences;and National Testing Services.
"Considerably more needs to be done on the part of Government as well the community of researchers and academics in this field", stated the Minister. "The key is in developing well-coordinated programmes in collaborations with national and possibly regional, as well as international groups and centres of excellence." He noted that there are wide-spread uses and applications of light and light-based technologies in developed and developing world, in the fields of defense, energy, communication, environmental monitoring, remote sensing, medicine, industrial research, information technology, etc.
The Symposium had earlier been started with remarks by the Rector CIIT, Dr. S.M. JunaidZaidi, who welcomed the speakers and participants, and wished them a good learning experience. The event's overview was given by Prof. Dr. Aslam Khan, Chairman of the event's Organizing Committee.He informed that the event would comprise of 16 parallel technical sessions, 10 plenary talks, 13 invited talks, 25 contributed talks and 25 poster presentations. The speakers of the event hail from Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Germany, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Pakistan, Sudan, Turkey, UK, and USA. Over 175 registered participants of the event belong to Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Sudan, and Turkey.
