US lawmakers introduce resolution in Congress to welcome PM Nawaz

Washington - Democrat Congresswoman Sheila Jackson and Republican Joe Pitts have introduced a resolution in the US House of Representatives to welcome Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who will be visiting the US this week.
The prime minister is visiting the United States at the invitation of President Barack Obama. Congressman Lee is the co-chairperson of Pakistan caucus in the US House of Representatives and is an influential voice in Washington. “The resolution introduced by the co-chairs of Pakistan Caucus in the US Congress represents sentiments of friendship and cordiality towards Pakistan,” Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani said while talking to APP here.
The resolution emphasises the need for stronger cooperation between the two countries. The resolution expressed solidarity with the people of Pakistan in their struggle against terrorism and supported strengthening democratic process in Islamabad. It also reaffirmed friendship and strategic partnership with Pakistan and encouraged and support ongoing cooperation between the US and Pakistan in a range of areas, including security, economic development, strengthening of democratic institutions, education and trade.
The resolution acknowledged the prime minister was a democratically elected leader of Pakistan and was a symbol of the first successful democratic transition in Pakistani history. It also recognises that people of Pakistan have consistently aspired to democracy and rule of law. The resolution says that Pakistan has been victim of attacks by Al-Qaida and other terrorist networks and more than 50,000 Pakistanis have lost their lives in these attacks.
Through the resolution, the lawmakers praisend the successful military operations undertaken by Pakistan in the tribal areas. It acknowledged that Prime Minister Nawaz was leading implementation of a National Action Plan to defeat terrorism so that all Pakistani communities, including religious and ethnic minorities, can live safely. The resolution noted that there were tremendous opportunities to enhance people-to-people exchanges between Pakistan and the US through trade, education, and development. The resolution has been made part of the congressional record.
