ISLAMABAD: Defying curfew and other restrictions people staged forceful pro-Pakistan and pro-freedom demonstrations in Srinagar and other towns, in Indian Held Kashmir (IHK) on Friday.

Call for the protests was given by the veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani and the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to protest against the unabated killings and stepped up Indian state terrorism in the held territory.

It was also supported by other pro-freedom leaders and groups, KMS reported.

The occupation authorities had imposed curfew and other restrictions in all major towns by deploying Indian troops and police personnel in strength to thwart anti-India demonstrations.

Despite stringent restrictions, people took to the streets in Srinagar, Islamabad, Bijbehara, Botengo, Khudwani, Qaimoh, Shopian, Kulgam, Pulwama, Tral, Baramulla, Sopore, Palhallan, Mattan, Achabal, Qazigund, Tangmarg and other areas and shouted high-pitched pro-Pakistan, pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.

They also raised Pakistani flags at several places.

Hurriyet leader, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, led a rally at Hyderpora in Srinagar against the killing of truck driver, Zahid Rasool Butt, by Hindu fanatics in Udhampur.

Indian forces’ personnel subjected the protesters to lathi-charge and teargas shelling at many places, injuring dozens of protesters.

Scores of youth were arrested during the demonstrations.

The authorities continued to detain all Hurriyet leaders in their houses and police stations to prevent them from leading the demonstrations. All roads leading to Srinagar’s central Jamia Masjid were sealed, disallowing the people to hold Juma prayers.

Indian police took into custody several activists of Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party at Sanat Nagar in Srinagar, today, when they tried to march towards the UN office at Sonawar. The memorandum addressed to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon contained details of human rights violations committed by Indian troops in the occupied territory.

Meanwhile, complete shutdown was observed in Shopian district against the killing of two youth by Indian troops, last evening. Thousands of people attended the funeral prayers of the martyred youth and shouted full-throated slogans in favour of freedom and against India.

People also observed shutdown and held protests in Bhaderwah town of Kishtwar district, today, against the desecration of Quran by some miscreants.
