India ready to help quake-hit areas: Modi
Hundreds dead, thousands injured as major quake jolts Pakistan
NEW DELHI – India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the Indian government is ready to offer assistance where required including Pakistan and Afghanistan.
“Heard about earthquake in Afghanistan-Pakistan region whose tremors have been felt in parts of India, I pray for everyone’s safety,” Modi wrote on his Twitter account. “Returned from Bihar. Spoke to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Shri Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and took stock of the situation arising due to the unfortunate earthquake,” he added.
“I just spoke to President Ashraf Ghani and expressed my sympathies and condolences at the damage caused by the earthquake. President Ashraf Ghani told me due to the quake a school building collapsed and children lost their lives. I was very pained to hear of this,” he said.
On Monday, Pakistan was struck by a powerful 8.1-magnitude earthquake, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds and injured at least 1,000 others. This is the second major earthquake to jolt the country in 10 years; the first one took place in Azad Kashmir region on October 8, 2005.
