PM visits Shangla, says it is the most affected area
SHANGLA: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in Shangla on Tuesday afternoon to meet earth quake affectees and review relief efforts.
After a briefing to the PM on the current situation in Shangla, the prime minister addressed the media and said that the quake has caused most damage to Shangla than any other area in Pakistan.
He went on to say that he has directed for immediate arrangements for medical treatment of the injured, adding that teams of doctors have been dispatched from Islamabad and the rest of Punjab.
PM Nawaz further said that for those who have been displaced, even better homes than before will be provided to them.
He also said that after consultation with Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pervaiz Khattak, an exceptional aid package will be announced within a couple of days for the affectees.
He added that wherever there has been damage or loss, efforts will be made to provide compensation.
The PM praised the hard work of army relief workers and said that the soldiers are working non stop with full commitment.
He also said that until the completion of rehabilitation work, he will personally keep on visiting all areas.
Earlier, during a briefing following his arrival, the PM was informed that at least 49 people lost their lives in Shangla during the quake.
He was also told that over 200 relief and rescue workers are participating in efforts in Shangla, adding that tents are being provided to the affectees.
During the briefing, the prime minister was further told that all blocked roads to the area were opened last night, however, settlements are spread all over Shangla which is causing difficulty in relief efforts.
Following the briefing, PM Nawaz said that calculations to overcome losses of properties and belongings of the affectees should be done on an immediate basis.
He also announced compensation of Rs.100,000 for those affectees whose homes have been completely destroyed, while Rs.50,000 for those who suffered minimal losses.
Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid, Governor Khyber Pakhtunkwa Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan and Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Asghar Nawaz accompanied the PM.
