ANP ‘stands by’ Zardari: Iftikhar
PESHAWAR: The democratic setup will survive in the midst of efforts to derail the system and the Awami National Party (ANP) “stands” by President Asif Ali Zardari, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government spokesman Mian Iftikhar Hussain said on Thursday. “We will complete five years (in government),” he declared while explaining how the flood situation was being used to “discredit” the civilian government. The government should act against the forces, which want an anti-democratic system to return, he said indirectly, referring to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). However, the spokesman later reconstructed his statement saying “other forces” should also be brought to the fold of the democratic system. Iftikhar said flood situation was being used as a pretext to pave the way for the return of martial laws. “There has been talks that the present democratic system will be wrapped up in the next few days. Now they say it will happen in the next three to four months. We tell them it will never happen. We will complete our tenure,” he said. The spokesman said the army, judiciary, democratic forces and media were “united” to defend the system, and welcomed that MQM chief Altaf Hussain had taken back his words on inviting to ‘patriotic generals’ to take over. He said it was welcoming that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif stood against the threats to the system. staff report
