PM orders withdrawal of facilities from NAB PG

* Gilani directs law secretary to implement SC orders in ‘letter and spirit’

* Qadir claims PM cannot remove him

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has directed the federal law secretary to withdraw all official facilities and privileges provided to Irfan Qadir, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor general, and said that the Supreme Court order regarding his removal should be implemented in “letter and spirit”.

According to a press statement issued by the PM’s Secretariat, Gilani said that Qadir should immediately cease to hold the office of the NAB PG. On September 1, the apex court had ordered the government to remove Qadir and find his replacement.

However, the delay in implementation of the SC orders gave rise to speculations that the government was not going to remove Qadir.

Qadir on Monday had stated that he would continue to hold his office “until the president removes me”. He also visited the NAB offices on Tuesday.

However, the PM’s latest directive has ordered Qadir’s removal on immediate basis. In the statement, the PM further stated that the new NAB chairman would be appointed after Eidul Fitr.

Talking to a private news channel on Tuesday, Irfan Qadir insisted that PM Gilani could not remove him and he would continue serving in NAB until President Zardari ordered his removal. staff report/daily times monitor
