US to continue support to Pakistan to overcome flood losses: Envoy


THATTA, Sept 15 (APP): United States’ special envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Halbrooke said on Wednesday that his country will continue to support Pakistan untill full relief and rehabilitation of the flood affected people is complete.The American Special Envoy said this when he flew in here by a helicopter and landed at Makli helipad.He was taken to a relief camp in Makli Stadium along with his entourage under strict security measures.Richard Halbrooke was accompanied by US ambassador to Pakistan Ms Anne W. Petterson and a 20-member delegation. They were received by District Coordination Officer (DCO) Manzoor Shaikh, District Police Officer Pir Fareed Jan Sarhandi and the concerned officials.

The US special envoy was driven to Circuit House at Makli where DCO Manzoor Shaikh presented a briefing about the flood situation.
The DCO said that more than 8,00,000 people were displaced due to the floods. He said that the economy of this district has been destroyed by flood.
Richard Halbrooke reviewed the relief measures and met with some flood affected people in the camp.
In his remarks on the occasion he said the United States is a friendly country to Pakistan. He said that United States has given eight helicopters, besides assistance to Pakistan for rescue and relief works in the flood affected areas. He said that his country will continue to support Pakistan in this time of natural calamity till full relief and rehabilitation of the flood affected people.
Strict security arrangements were enforced and his route and the entire vicinity of the visit were cordoned off by large contingents of police and law enforcement agencies.
