Overflowing Manchhar Lake inundates several villages

Daily Times Monitor

LAHORE: Sindh Irrigation authorities made a cut in Ural Wah Regulator to save Sehwan Sharif from the rising waters of Manchar Lake, whereas canals emanating from the lake overflowed and inundated dozens of villages and crops over several acres of land, a private TV channel reported on Tuesday.

Water from the lake had been diverted to the Indus River via Sapna Stream. Authorities claimed Dadu, Bhan and Saeedabad were out of danger. Despite the cut in the Ural Wah Regulator, situation was far from normal as water had entered Danstar Wah from Regulator-1 of the lake, threatening to flood hundreds of villages. The Bobak city and Sehwan Airport Indus Highway were also at risk. Protective embankments around the lake were under pressure as water kept surging. The residents of Dal, Bobak and Channa were on the move as authorities reissued evacuation orders. Juhi tehsil remained cut off from surrounding areas for the 10th consecutive day.
