* PPP govt failed to implement Charter of Democracy

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif has said that there should be a change in the government according to the law if the government did not improve itself, a private TV channel reported on Thursday.
Talking to poets and columnists in Lahore, Nawaz condemned statements backing another military take-over in the country. “If the government fails to perform, the change should be made as per law,” he said, adding that his party had joined the coalition government on the hope that rule of law should be ensured. “Martial law is not a solution of the problems facing Pakistan. Military rule caused the country to split in 1971 along with badly damaging all democratic institutions,” he said.
Nawaz said that efforts were being made in the country to slow down the progress of democracy.
He claimed that it was his sole desire to see the government improve its ways. “My party made an alliance with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) only to strengthen democracy in the country, but the government has failed to implement the Charter of Democracy (CoD),” he said. The PML-N chief said that corruption had increased massively in the country due to non-implementation of the CoD.
He said that the government should not overly rely on foreign aid and instead utilise its financial resources. “We will not need foreign aid if local resources are used properly,” he said. The PML-N leader said that the 18th Amendment had been passed only for the sake of democracy.
Nawaz said that India’s biggest achievement was not attaining the status of a nuclear power, instead the country was respected in the international community because it was the biggest democracy in the world.
