LAHORE: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Sunday warned that any change effected by nonpolitical elements would be dangerous, but saw no harm in democratic intervention to better things.

Talking to senior journalists and columnists at his residence in Lahore, the prime minister asserted that the government had everything under its control and all talks of change were nothing but rumours. He saw no cause of worry if the change came through democratic means and offered to make way for any parliamentarian who wanted to come forward and lead.

Reiterating the need for the democratic system to continue, he claimed that some elements were plotting against the constitutional institutions but they would fail in their designs. Noting that the government was working with unity and consensus, the prime minister said that it would complete its tenure.

Referring to flood devastation, the prime minister called on those desirous of change to “show mercy for the flood victims”. He said provision of relief to flood victims was the government’s top priority and it had diverted all its resources toward this cause. Gilani said those trying to malign the government would not be tolerated. He stressed that continuity of the democratic process was vital for the country’s solidarity and survival.

The prime minister said solving people’s problems was the government’s first priority. He said his party was pursuing conciliatory politics which was why no one had been incarcerated on political grounds during the present government’s rule. Pointing to his cordial relations with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif, he asked him to join parliament and play his due democratic role. Gilani said he did not see good governance in Punjab and the province was facing budgetary deficit.
