Politics of reconciliation will continue, says Zardari
* President says PPP, himself don’t have problems with Nawaz over statements against PPP-led govt

LAHORE: President and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday told the party’s Central Executive Council that all coalition parties of the government have assured him that they will continue their support to the democratic system in the country.
PPP sources who attended the council meeting told Daily Times that no ‘hard issue’ had been discussed in the meeting, but President Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani talked about national-level issues, such as restoration of flood-hit people, faced by the government.
The sources said that Zardari told the meeting that the PPP and himself had no problems with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif regarding his aggressive statements against the PPP-led government.
“Nawaz is our comrade so we have no annoyance with him, as the PPP has a strong belief in the politics of reconciliation and will continue this policy in the future as well following the vision of the party’s martyred chairwoman Benazir Bhutto,” Zardari told the meeting, the sources added.
They also said the president had told the CEC meeting that the new president of the party in Punjab would be announced next month, while the party’s reorganisation procedure would also be started within a month. The PPP also decided to reorganise the party in Balochistan as well as in other provinces.
About the PPP Punjab’s new president, sources said that although the meeting did not discuss the name of any party leader for the seat, there were chances of provincial minister and a committed worker, Tanveer Ashraf Kaira, who is the brother of federal minister and PPP’s Information Secretary Qamar Zaman Kaira.
Regarding replacement of the central secretary general of the party, Jahangir Badr, the sources said that this issue was also not discussed in the meeting, but the central command was eyeing federal Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar as a suitable candidate for the post.
Participants of the CEC meeting also spoke about their problems in running the party or their portfolios given by the party, while they also informed the party leadership about their individual problems. Some members also moved up the issue of PPP workers’ unemployment and suggested providing jobs to them in the public sector, the sources added.
