Pakistan and Indian foreign ministers to meet in next couple of days
UNITED NATIONS, Sept 25 (APP): Foreign Ministers of Pakistan and India, who had a ‘chance encounter’ at the United Nations on Friday, are expected to have a substantive meeting in the next two days, according to informed sources. Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Indian External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna are in New York leading their respective delegations to the 65th session of the UN General Assembly. But the exact date and time of their formal meeting has yet to be finalized.
On Friday, the two leaders, who were coming out of separate meetings at UN Headquarters, ran into each other, according to the sources. They greeted each other and exchanged pleasantries.
Foreign minister Qureshi is understood to have told Krishna that the international response to the UN appeal for help to flood-hit Pakistan has been picking up, after his Indian counterpart inquired about the flood situation.
Qureshi is understood to have thanked Krishna for India’s flood relief assistance amounting to $20 million.
The chance encounter at the UN was their first interaction since their meeting in Islamabad in July.
Qureshi has told various forums here that the resolution of Jammu and Kashmir is imperative for South Asian security. The foreign minister on Friday made it clear that Pakistan cannot be oblivious to the situation in the Indian occupied territory.
Meanwhile, according to the Indian media, Krishna has indicated New Delhi’s willingness to discuss all outstanding issues with Pakistan including Kashmir, which has witnessed gross human rights violations and killing of our 100 people in recent days.
“Well, I was in Islamabad and we did talk and I have invited Excellency Qureshi to come to India and he has very graciously accepted my invitation” Krishna said.
“I am looking forward to hosting him in Delhi, and the dates have to be worked out,” Krishna was quoted as saying.
