Those spreading rumours about democratic regime to face disappointment: Kaira

ISLAMABAD, Sep 28 (APP): Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Qamar Zaman Kaira has said those who are spreading rumours about de-stabilization of a democratic regime in the country would face disappointment. He said strengthening of democracy is need of the hour to make the country strong and stable and those who are in haste to see the democratic system derailed, should understand that it was the ballot box which brought us to power. In a programme telecast on a private news channel, he said Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) inspite of differences has always given respect and honour to the judiciary and never even thought of confrontation.

Qamar Zaman Kaira said the government has requested the Supreme Court to defer the hearing of the NRO implementation case till the decision on its review appeal.
He said the government has asked the Court to review its own verdict issued on National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), adding “If we have requested deferment it does not mean we are trying to buy time.”
Answering a question, the minister said PPP has not utilized the NRO as privilege and not even utilized it as a tool. It is the PPP’s government which has not defended the NRO in Supreme Court, “we are just asking the court to review its own decision on NRO.”
The minister said that in the prevailing circumstances when the country is passing through a critical stage, confrontation among institutions will have a very negative impact on stability of the country. Rather there is a need to make democracy and democratic institutions more stronger with the aim to making the country stable, he added.
He said some vested elements are raising the voice of revolution under a planned conspiracy to derail democracy.
Qamar Zaman Kaira regretted that some analysts were making predictions by giving dates about dethroning of government and added in this way they have confused the people.
He asked the media to play its historic role and scuttle the conspiracies being hatched against the country. Media needs to keep the country’s interest in high esteem and understand the conspiracies being hatched by anti-democratic elements.
Replying to another question about Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani’s meeting with the senior mediapersons on Sunday, he said it was a routine gathering and was arranged to get inputs.
During discussion with media, the prime minister also answered their questions.
The minister said Foreign Office of Pakistan has raised a strong protest against crossing of Pakistan’s border by NATO’s choppers to take action against suspected Al-Qaeda Taliban.
